Dec 5th, 2009 2009 AMA DISTRICT 23 AWARDS BANQUET!!
  And here come the awards!

2009 was an enjoyable Rookie Season for young MX racer Zachary Bailey. After a summer of firsts on the track, Zachary enjoyed another first as he traveled to Jackpot Junction Casino in Morton, MN to attend this first ever AMA Sanctioned Awards Banquet to pick up some hard ware for finishing the 2009 season within the top-10 in point standings in two seperate officially sanctioned A.M.A. MX Divisions competing throughout the entire state of Minnesota (District 23)!

In the 65cc 7-11 Division, Zachary finished the 2009 season (his Rookie year of Motocross competition) in 10 place in the over-all point standings. Considering this division was made up of EIGHTY-FOUR (84) different riders . . . we're almost speechless with the results. What an incredibly strong showing amongst a HUGE group of competitors!

In the 65cc 10-11 Division, Zachary missed out on a top-5 placing by one single event (he was fifth in points entering the final race of the season!). But, he did end up in a three-way tie for sixth place (along with Trey Spreeman and Grayson Ferencik). Again, an great showing for this raw rookie!

And, as a complete surprise to BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS, Zachary was also awarded a plaque from Motokazie Motorsports Productions for a 7th place over-all finish in the 65cc 10-11 Division!

What a year! And we're already looking forward to 2010!

Zachary's official results for the season can be found on our RACE RESULTS PAGE and you can see images of the Plaques from the Banquet on our '09 SEASON AWARDS IMAGES PAGE.

Sept 27th, 2009 ROOKIE SEASON WRAP-UP!!
And so the Rookie season of a bright new member of the MX community comes to a close.

2009 may have been a turning point for young Zachary Bailey. A bright, polite, smiling 11 year old, started the year with a question, "Can I do a motocross race this summer?" and ended it with a nearly phenominal season that catapulted him into a battle within the top-10 in point standings in two seperate officially sanctioned A.M.A. MX Divisions competing throughout the entire state of Minnesota (District 23)!

Locked into a four-cycle battle to finish the year in the top-5 in one division, and a three-cycle battle to finish the year in the top-10 in a second division, BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS 65cc racer Zachary "Zach-Attack" Bailey headed for the season-ending MX event at ELKO SPEEDWAY MX in Elko, MN to do battle!

Zachary gave it his all during his final outing of the season. He attacked the track and the competition and raced to the best of his rookie abilities. At the end of the day, Zachary shattered his expectations from the beginning of the season by finishing up in a three-way tie for sixth place over-all in the 65cc 10-11 Division and a tenth place finish in the 65cc 7-11 Division!

Zachary's official results can be found on our RACE RESULTS PAGE.

Sept 19th, 2009 FAMILY FLAT-TRACKIN' AT ISANTI COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS!
In the immortal words of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" . . . And now for something completely different!

Thus far through the 2009 racing season, BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS has been focusing our efforts on Zachary's motocross action. But, this past weekend we decided to break away from the norm, and have a little fun trying something just a little . . . well . . . different!

We loaded up Zach's KX-65 and Dan's modified TT-R 125 and made the long haul north to the Isanti County Fairgrounds in Cambridge, MN . . . and would you believe it, but, we didn't do half bad . . . for a couple Flat-Track 'Newbies'!

Dan entered his modified TT-R 125 in two divisions (the "Mad-Dog" and "Beginners C 125-OPEN" divisions) while Zach entered the 65cc division. The racing was fun and the evening was very enjoyable. When the evening was complete, Zach was enjoying yet another first place finish (heat and feature win, providing for an overall Class win!) and Dan was enjoying a second place overall Class finish in the "Beginners C 125-OPEN" division with an eighth place overall Class finish in the "Mad Dog" division.

While Zach says that he wants to focus his '10 efforts on motocross again, he will not rule out a 'few' Flat-Track runs for fun, and Dan says that he's definately going to run 'several' Flat-Track events during the '10 season.

Check out our updated FLAT TRACK IMAGES PAGE for some of our 'self-clicked' photos from the evening. (We spoke with a professional photographer who was at the track, so, we'll get some photos of better quality posted here as soon as they're available. )

Zachary's and Dan's official results can be found on our RACE RESULTS PAGE.

September 27th Zachary will conclude his 2009 rookie motocross season schedule at ELKO SPEEDWAY MX in Elko, MN - stay tuned for details . . .

Sept 13th, 2009 A BREAK OUT DAY AT HURRICANE HILLS!
This was the performance for which we've been striving ALL YEAR! The main goal of our 2009 season was for Zachary to have fun, to learn the sport and to improve through the year. Well, this past Sunday (September 13th) we reached every single one of those goals when Zachary ("Zach-Attack") turned in a phenomenal performance!

A racer's "Rookie Season" is tough; a lot to learn and a lot of progress to make. Sunday Zachary lit a fire under himself and his on-track performance was 'leaps and bounds' above anything he's shown thus far in his already impressive rookie season - a season that has taken him into the top-10 in point standings, throughout the entire state of Minnesota, in both of his divisions - and into the top-5 in one of those divisions! But this Sunday, at Hurricane Hills MX Park in Mazeppa, MN, was different.

In just his first moto of the day, it was obvious that Zachary was in the mood to rock the joint! There was a spark in his eyes, a fire in his heart and visible hunger in his personality as he headed towards the track. In pre-race discussions, we'd discussed quite a bit - a completely different starting gate plan, some thoughts on where a little extra speed could be found, and on the simply fact that the season was winding down.

His first moto was stronger than usual, noticeably. But it was during his second moto that it was obvious he was treading into unchartered waters. His shot out of the starting gate was his strongest of the year, his straightaway speeds were visibly faster, and, perhaps most importantly, he was carrying momentum from one track section straight into the next - which allowed him to turn in COMPLETE laps (rather than a lap with a few disjointed strong spots).

His third race was like a completely different world! His starting gate exit was impressive as he raced the pack all the way to the first turn. He battled the pack the entire race and swapped positions several times with fellow competitors. On lap two, I noticed that his confidence was high and that he had plans to conquer one portion of the track that's always weighed heavy on his mind . . . THE BACK STRAIGHT DOUBLE! There's a tight right hander right before this double, and it always robs Zach of his momentum. On top of this, the first jump of the double has an appearance of a sheer straight down drop which seems to never end, before the short flat that meets up with the second roller of the double. But, on his second lap, Zach wristed the throttle through the tight right-hander, and shot straight towards the double. I could tell he was ready to give it a try and caught his launch with my Kodak Digital:
He ALMOST made it. In fact, his front tire did . . . but, his rear tire missed by just inches. It was a hard landing, but it was a visible turning point. As he roared away, he traveled the length of the back straight at a speed I'd never witnessed before!

The next lap, I stood in the same spot, with my camera at the ready. As he approached the tight right handed corner, I could already tell that this was going to be the lap! He was carrying even more speed INTO the turn than normal. He navigated the corner and headed towards the double . . . I wasn't sure if I should watch the display screen on the camera, watch him on the track, or close my eyes! But I caught it!
THE SHOT OF THE YEAR - ZACHARY CLEARS THE DOUBLE!!
After the race it was high-fives all around!

The fourth race was a mixture of good and evil. It started right where his previous two had left off, an impressive start and a run with the pack down to the first turn. As he started his third lap, he was still racing with the pack and turning in an amazing performance that was sure to be the highlight of the day. I watched him enter the whoops section and then turned my body to set up the camera for a shot of the 'hole shot table top' . . . I waited and waited and waited . . . waited . . .

I turned when I saw spectators running towards the whoops section out of the corner of my eyes. I turned to look, but he speedway tower was in my site line . . . but, I just knew that he wasn't coming out of the whoops. :-( I set off on a dead run with Allie in hot pursuit on her bicycle. I saw a crowd gathering around the fence line just at the end of the whoops section and a couple speedway officials on the run! As I crested the hill I saw Zach just beginning to arise from a cloud of dust and dirt. He'd flipped his cycle and taken a nasty "face plant" right there in the unwatered hard-pack on the side of the track and the cycle had continued the tumble and landed right on top of him, pinning him to the ground until the first speedway official had arrived to lift the bike.

He'd rung his bell, hurt his right wrist (while trying to break his fall) and his leg was throbbing from the cycle landing on top of him. His first comment was, "I'm done. That's it." But, then, after a moment, in a surprise move, he climbed back onto his cycle and completed the race - at a reduced speed, he 'limped' around the track to the waving checkered flag. But the memory that will never fade, is the eruption of applause and cheers that arose from the crowd (that had gathered around where he'd tumbled) when he mustered up the courage to climb back onto his cycle and ride away to finish that race!

The most important thing that I want to stress is the fact that his Leatt Brace did it's job! He took a massive 'face plant' straight into the dirt - his face was completely brown and covered in dirt when he removed his helmet, the visor was pushed straight up to an almost vertical stance, the front of the helmet (which protects his mouth area) was packed with a hard chunk of hard dirt . . . but, thanks to his Leatt Brace, his neck never 'over extended' and he had absolutely NO pain in his neck, head, or, for that matter, any of his upper body (shoulders up).

It's a tough sport - but on this day, Zachary "Zach-Attack" Bailey proved that he was tougher!

When all was said and done, his day at the track rewarded him with a 5th place over-all finish in the 65cc 10-11 division, and an 11th place over-all finish in the 65cc 7-11 division!

August 23rd, 2009 EXCITEMENT AT ELKO!
What a 180 degree turn-around from the last event and the last time at this track!

If you'll remember, BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS racer Zachary Bailey endured soaring temperatures, over-whelming humidity and struggles with asthma on his August 9th visit to Midway MX Park in Kellogg, MN; and on his one and only visit to ELKO SPEEDWAY MX in Elko, MN on May 17th. This week, Zach turned it all around with a fun, fast and successful return to the track with a great run at Elko.

Week by week his skills and comfort continue to improve, which translates into quicker lap times and stronger speeds . . . it truely was a trill to see him attacking the "Cities Edge Step Down jump" and the table tops with confidence and enjoyment. What really caught our eyes was how well he handled the long line of Whoops just after the finish line and before the last tight left hairpin before the starting gate straight! He looked comfortable and quick as he pushed his KX65 further and faster than ever before!

When all was said and done, his day at the track rewarded him with an 8th place over-all finish in the 65cc 10-11 division -- which continues his amazing rise into the TOP-5 in the 65cc 10-11 division state-wide point standings and a 12th place over-all finish in the 65cc 7-11 division -- keeping him within the top-10 (9th overall) in the 65cc 7-11 division!

August 9th, 2009 A SCORCHER AT MIDWAY!
The heat was bad, and the humidity made it worse!

BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS racer Zachary Bailey endured a downright terrible day at Midway MX Park in Kellogg, MN as temperatures soared into the 90s and the humidity combined with the heat to produce a thick sticky day that was hard on everyone. Toss into the mix Zachary's struggles with asthma, and it was a tough day for motocross!

Zachary tried to push himself and his KX65 as hard as he could, and despite the crippling - almost suffocating heat and humidity - he was fought, battled and clawed his way to a 5th place overall finish in the 65cc 10-11 division (worth an additional 16 points) and a 12th place overall finish in the 65cc 7-11 division (9 points for his battle in the state-wide district 23 point standings).

At the end of the day, his efforts payed off by bumping him all the way to an amazing 6th in the 65cc 10-11 division state-wide point standings and stay within the top-10 (8th overall) in the 65cc 7-11 division!

August 5th, 2009 MOTORCYCLE NIGHT AT WINONA'S LAKEVIEW DRIVE-INN!
  Family, Food & Fun!

BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS was deeply honored to be a part of "Motorcycle Night" at Winona's Lakeview Drive-Inn!

B.F.M. riders Zachary and Allison Bailey joined in the fun on Wednesday night August 5th as participants in "Cruise Night" at Winona's Lakeview Drive-Inn! A weekly event at one of Winona's iconic locations, "Cruise Night" brings together everything that is small-town Americana each and every Wednesday evening through the summer! An evening at Lakeview Drive-Inn, Winona's Oldest Restaurant (est. 1938) is like taking a step back into "Yester-year" (whether it's "Cruise Night" or not) and presents a visitor with everything needed to complete the perfect "Family Night Out" - Family, Food & Fun; and adding in "Gear-Heads" of all types and persuasions (Cars, Trucks, Classics, Currents, Hot Rods, Racers, Comfort Sedans, Motorcycles, there's even a special night for antique farm tractors!) on "Cruise Nights" - it's pure delight for the eyes in addition to heaven for the taste buds.

Lakeview Drive-Inn Owners John, Bill, and Tim Glowczewski are some of the nicest, most down to earth people you'll ever meet anywhere; And when they pass a frosty mug of their home brewed Lakeview Drive Inn "Sno-Cap" root beer across the counter (flanked by any of their delicious fresh hot food) it's almost impossible to not smile from sheer delight!

August 2nd, 2009 A FAMILY AFFAIR AT HURRICANE HILLS!
There's just something special about competing in front of extended family!

BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS racer Zachary Bailey was thrilled to compete for the first time in front of both Grandma AND Grandpa Bailey at Hurricane Hills MX Park in Mazeppa, MN! And in doing so, turned in some of his best performances of this his rookie season!

With all of his 'seat time' thus far this season, Zach's speed continues to improve as his skills rise and his comfort level increases. With a full pack present in the 65cc 7-11 class, Zach raced hard but was plagued by a couple stalls that dropped him to a deep 11th place overall finish. In the 65cc 10-11 class, everybody was excited as Zach actually raced his way into the lead in both motos and came up just a hair shy of a moto win (and possibly an overall class win) in the second moto!

July 19th, 2009 A BLACK DAY AT MIDWAY!
On what we had hoped would be a fun-filled day of racing for BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS racer Zachary Bailey at Midway MX Park in Kellogg, MN, the entire mx racing community suffered through a black day.

While the day started out joyous and fun, with racers hitting the track full of excitement following the previous days Pro-Nationals just up the road in Millville, MN it quickly turned sour when a member of the racing community was lost in the pit area! The entire day's action was called, appropriately, following the complition of the first motos in respect for the fallen competitor and his family.

Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family of Ross Thompson.

At this point we're still debating on whether we will make the long haul up to ELKO SPEEDWAY MX in Elko, MN on Sunday July 26th, or wait and resume our 2009 schedule on August 2nd back at Hurricane Hills MX Park in Mazeppa, MN. . .

July 5th, 2009 A SOLID SHOWING OVER AN EXTENDED FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND AT HURRICANE HILLS!
An extended Fourth of July weekend provided BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS racer Zachary Bailey with a two day event at Hurricane Hills MX Park in Mazeppa, MN during which he could further improve his MX skills.

With, again, a very strong group of racers in both division in which Zachary competed, he was able to utilize two practice sessions and eight motos to work on his level of competetiveness. While the other racers with multiple years of racing experience dominated the top finishing positions, Zachary enjoyed his best race to date during the final moto of the extended weekend!

According to our continuing 2009 season plans, Zachary was once again entered in two separate classes in an effort to give him as much competition 'seat time' as possible during each race day - and since this was a two-day extended weekend event . . . that meant twice as much seat time.

This week it was back to Hurricane Hills, and while Zachary didn't pick up another moto or class win, he did run some of his best races of this season! With Grandma Midge and supper supporter Sister Allison in attendance, Zach produced speeds from himself and his cycle which rivaled any we'd seen yet this season, and he even enjoyed some true 'hang time' on the Hurricane Hills jumps! Despite a first moto DNF, with a hard tumble and a broken clutch lever, which forced him to a slightly dissappoiting 9th place over all finish in the 65cc 7-11 Class, we were able to fix the bike and help Zach race onto a third place over all finish in the 65cc 10-11 Class!

Once again we'll take the next week off to focus on Birthday Celebrations, and then resume our 2009 schedule on July 19th back at Midway MX Park in Kellogg, MN. Will we again experience success? Only time will tell . . .

May 31st, 2009 WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL, OR WE'RE GOING TO GET SPOILED TO QUICKLY!
We have to be honest with you all, things are almost going TOO WELL!

For the second time in only three motocross starts, BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS racer Zachary Bailey is coming home a victor! And once again the win came at Hurricane Hills MX Park in Mazeppa, MN. According to our 2009 season plan, Zachary was once again entered in two separate classes in an effort to give him as much competition 'seat time' as possible during each race day. During the 2009 AMA Sanctioned District 23 Motocross Season Opener Zachary surprised everyone by bringing home his first ever Moto and Class win from Hurricane Hills MX Park. During Zachary's second outing he learned the flip side of racing by struggling to keep up with the stout competition and even accepting his very first DNF after dumping his cycle hard just out of the starting gates.

This week it was back to Hurricane Hills, and incredibly another moto and class win! At the season opener, Zachary won a Moto and the Class in the 65cc 7-11 Division while finishing third in the 65cc 10-11 Division. This time out, however, it was the exact opposite as Zachary won his opening moto in the 65cc 10-11 Division and held on with a solid second moto run to claim the Class Title! In the 65cc 7-11 Division, Zachary suffered a couple stalls in the opening moto and then a hard first-lap fall after track officials applied a generous watering to the track just before his second moto. Aside from a bent up clutch and an almost complete body covering of mud, Zachary suffered no injuries.

May 17th, 2009 FROM "THE THRILL OF VICTORY" TO "THE AGONY OF DEFEAT"
Just one week ago BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS racer Zachary Bailey surprised everyone by bringing home his first ever Moto and Division win during his 2009 AMA Sanctioned District 23 Motocross Season Opener at Hurricane Hills MX Park in Mazeppa, MN.

This week Zachary learned about the other end of the spectrum of emotions in the racing world. Making his maiden voyage to the Motokazie promoted ELKO SPEEDWAY MX in Elko, MN Zachary experienced a rather 'down' day. Struggling to learn the new circuit and keep up with a larger field of incredibly impressive and talented competitors, Zachary was only able to bring home a 6th place finish in the 65cc 7-11 Division; in the 65cc 10-11 Zachary learned how tough motocross can be with a launch out of the starting gate that had both him and his KX-65 at least a foot off the ground - only to come tumbling hard back to earth and ending his moto before he'd even made it to the first turn.

Snapping the rear of his cycle off like a twig and bending up the exhaust while packing it nearly three inches deep with dirt from the racing surface means that there'll be plenty of time spent in the garage trying to get the cycle and Zach back on track. The good news, however, is that Zachary sprang right up from the incident and never even suffered so much as a scratch.

However, on the bright side of things, Zachary's second event of the young 2009 season helped propel him higher in the Division point standings! Check out the POINT STANDINGS PAGE to see how he's doing.

Race #2 of the '09 Season!

So, we'll take the next week off for some well deserved birthday celebrating for Allison, and hopefully be ready to resume our 2009 schedule on May 31st back at Hurricane Hills MX Park in Mazeppa, MN.

May 10th, 2009 The 2009 season FINALLY got underway for BAILEY FAMILY MOTORSPORTS - and what a start it was! Rise and Shine at 3:30 AM, after staying up till midnight the evening before to get everything loaded into the trailer (still a work in progress, but, it's getting there) and hit the road at 4:30 AM!

"YAWN"!

Zachary was registered to compete in two divisions - 65cc 7-11 year olds and 65cc 10 and 11 year olds - it was obvious in practice that the other competitors in both divisions were VERY strong and quite advanced . . . but Zachary learned a very important lesson about motorsports, and sports in general, "a true competitor NEVER EVER EVER gives up".

By the end of the day, Zachary enjoyed a third place overall finish in the 65cc 10-11 Division; but what really caught just about everybody by surprise was the way the results worked themselves out in the 65cc 7-11 division.

After a satisfying second place finish in the first moto, Zachary was running a distant second in the second moto. On the final lap, winding his way through the last portion of the track Zachary accepted the benefit of the leader's misfortune. After crossing the finish line Zachary commented, in almost an unsure voice, "I, Hey, I think I passed the leader back there!" Sure enough, moto leader Garret Strege had suffered a mechanical malfunction almost within sight of the checkered flag! Zachary was more than happy to inherit the lead and race on to his first ever moto win, AND the overall Division win!

'09 Season Opener Photos!

April 5th, 2009 Well, the season opener at Midway MX was cancelled, due to a late-winter storm blowing through the Upper Midwest. On a positive note, we had a great time helping "Great Grandma Bailey" celebrate her 100th Birthday.
Or next scheduled outting (our new 'season opener') will either be Sunday April 19th at Midway MX in Kellogg, or Sunday April 26th at Hurricane Hills in Mazeppa.

March 31st, 2009 Got a LOT going on this week.
  • Gotta get Zach's KX-65 lettered,
  • Engine work on the KX-65,
  • Gotta finish the work on the Trailer,
  • Weather permitting, the season opener is this Sunday - April 5th
    but, most importantly
  • Saturday we'll be going to celebrate the 100th Birthday of "Great Grandma Bailey"! Whoo Hoo!

March 30th, 2009 Annnnnnnnnd - WE'RE LIVE! BaileyFamilyMotorsports.com goes live at 10:55 pm! Yeah!

March 2009 Picked up an enclosed 6x10 trailer for getting to and from this season's events. Sure could have used it during February when we hauled both of Zach's Cycles through the February Blizzard that dumped anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow on us (you ever try to release a tie-down that's coated with about 1/4 inch of solid ice - at 1:30 AM?)! Heh heh. We have some exterior 'cleaning up' to do - once that's done, we'll get some pictures posted in the 'IMAGES' area of the 'MEDIA' Section.

February 2009 Zachary participated in a Motocross training school each Tuesday evening through the month of February - at the newly built AMSOIL SANDBOX INDOOR MOTORCROSS ARENA in New Richmond, WI. It was a long drive to and from (and some truly treacherous weather on two of the evenings) but Zachary has now had a chance to turn many laps with his new racing ride!

Winter '08 into Spring of '09 Spending LOTS of time and engery trying to get things ready!
